ASER 2018: Half of all children in India can read, less than a third can do basic arithmetic

As our Republic turns 70 today, there is yet another occasion to feel proud of how long we have come!

As per the findings of the 13th Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), the percentage of children who can read at Grade 3 level and do simple arithmetic has increased since 2016. In states like Punjab, Haryana, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Kerala, children enrolled in government schools have seen an improvement of 5 percentage points over 2016 levels. According to Wilima Wadhwa, Director, ASER Centre, “In states like Punjab and Maharashtra, we already knew that the state governments were undertaking learning programs but the growth registered by government schools in states such as UP was unexpected.”
